Despite his vast fortune, Silas lived a joyless and sullen existence. He was too paranoid and arrogant to trust anyone, firmly believing he was far too astute to ever be tricked. But as the old saying goes, a vain man is often the most gullible.

Enter Barnaby, a traveling "businessman" with a flashy suit and a boastful smile. In reality, Barnaby was a deceitful scoundrel, a highly devious fraud who made his living by exploiting the ignorant. Barnaby had heard of Silas’s wealth and immediately hatched a nefarious plot. However, Barnaby knew that an obnoxious stranger couldn't simply walk up to a cautious miser and ask for money. He needed an inside connection.

For this, Barnaby recruited Beatrice, the town’s baker. Beatrice was the ultimate hypocrite. To everyone's face, she wore a mask that was warm, sincere, and seemingly honest, but behind closed doors, she was malicious, spiteful, and entirely untrustworthy.

One chilly afternoon, Beatrice invited Silas for a cup of tea. Knowing how cheap he was, she offered it for free, which instantly melted his inflexible defenses.

"Oh, Silas," Beatrice sighed, playing the role of a loyal friend. "I must share a secret with you, though I hesitate, knowing how cautious you are. A gentleman named Barnaby has come to town with a magical alchemy box. You put one gold coin inside, turn the crank, and out pop two! It is completely genuine! I tried it myself."

Silas’s eyes widened. His usually grumpy demeanor vanished, replaced by an intense, gluttonous hunger for free wealth. "Two for one, you say? And you are certain this man is not a knave?"

"I am completely truthful," the treacherous baker replied, perfectly hiding her sneaky intentions. "But he leaves tomorrow. You must act fast."

Driven entirely by his reckless greed, Silas demanded to meet this Barnaby. When they met, Barnaby played his part flawlessly. He didn't act aggressive or pushy; instead, he acted modest and humble, pretending he was reluctant to share his "magic box" with a stranger.

"I only do this for the pure, benevolent joy of helping others," Barnaby lied, his flippant charm working like a spell. "But since Beatrice vouches for you, I will allow you to double your fortune. Bring your gold tonight."

That evening, the foolish miser lugged his heavy iron safe to Barnaby’s rented room. Silas was so consumed by the thought of becoming twice as rich that he abandoned all rational thought. He watched in awe as Barnaby loaded the heavy bags of gold into a large, velvet-lined wooden cabinet. Barnaby spun a wheel, chanted some nonsense words, and then told Silas, "The alchemy requires exactly eight hours to set. Do not open the box before dawn, or the gold will turn to lead!"

Silas, playing the part of the obedient and trusting fool, sat in a chair guarding the box all night, too impatient to sleep, yet too terrified of ruining the magic to open it.

When dawn finally broke, Silas threw open the cabinet doors. There was no doubled gold. In fact, there was no gold at all. The cabinet had a false back leading straight out the window! The bags inside were filled with nothing but heavy, worthless rocks.

The traitor Beatrice and the malicious con artist had slipped away into the night, leaving the arrogant miser with nothing but river stones.

Silas ran into the street, pulling his hair and wailing. The townsfolk, who had suffered under his callous and ruthless penny-pinching for years, found it hard to be sympathetic. In the end, Silas learned a hard lesson: a man whose soul is entirely corrupt with greed is the easiest mark of all, and sometimes, trying to be extravagant for free makes you the poorest man in town.
